Site Evaluation

Rigby Viniculture works with HydroGeo Terroir Consulting for Site Evaluation.  Traditional soil analysis was developed for annual row crops and therefore only looks at the top 6-8″ of soil.  Commercial agronomy labs calculate soil amendment recommendations based on this shallow layer of soil.  Vine roots can grow to great depths if the soil makeup allows.

Our approach to site analysis includes digging soil pits to evaluate the soil profile, analyzing for physical (i.e. texture, structure, rock content, etc.), chemical (i.e. nutrient status, pH, etc.), and biological parameters at different depths.  From this analysis we can predict how well grapevines will grow at various locations on the proposed vineyard land.

In addition to the soil makeup, we use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to evaluate elevation, aspect, slope, landforms, and surrounding impediments to drainage (both air and water).  Weather data analysis and potential for pests also play a major part in the site evaluation process.

If the site shows potential for vineyard development, we will suggest appropriate varieties and rootstocks that will perform best on the site. If desired, a “to-do” list can be generated so you can proceed with vineyard establishment.
