Vineyard layout and design This step includes selection of grape varieties, clones and rootstocks, selection of the appropriate trellis system, spacing of vines and vine rows, orientation of rows, and actual location on the property of the vineyard blocks. We suggest that the total project be designed from the beginning so that future vineyard blocks, buildings (winery or tasting room), roads and parking be included. A surveyor may be needed for this step.
Vineyard installation Vineyard installation includes many sub-steps, such as, site preparation, planting, trellis installation, and irrigation installation. Rigby Viniculture can guide you through all these steps.
Grapevine canopy management Growing grapes in the Eastern United States is very challenging because of the humid climatic conditions. In order to maximize fruit quality and minimize pesticide inputs, we practice precise canopy management throughout the growing season. Rigby Viniculture can train you and/or your labor force in these techniques, beginning with pruning and ending at harvest. We provide onsite visits at critical times during the growing season to ensure proper canopy management.
